There are pessimists and optimists in language as in all aspects of life. The pessimists believe that at some point language was at its best and that it has been on a downhill slide from there, The optimists revel in new words, marvelling at their wit, grace and aptness.

Nowadays, we're more and more focused on new words, getting closer to that instance where new words are actually created. It's slightly frustrating because we can never get there. Beyond the dictionary is the spoken language and unless we have everyone wired up and listen constantly and monitor what everyone says every moment of the day, we're never going to capture the true sources of words and how they evolve.
